Butler County Released Inmates
A released Butler County inmate is a person who has left the Butler County Correctional Facility, also called the Butler County Jail, by bond, court order, time served, sentence completion, probation disposition, dismissal, transfer, or another custody decision. The release does not always mean the case is over. It means the jail no longer holds the person under that booking. The next record may be a court docket, a sheriff release entry, an Alabama VINE status, an Alabama Department of Corrections record, or an Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles supervision record.
The local record path matters because Butler County does not have a confirmed public release archive in the official app feeds checked for the research. The county government page points users to the sheriff app, and the app manifest lists detention tools, but the checked inmate and recent-arrest endpoints returned empty arrays. A missing app entry should be treated as an uncertain result. Confirm through the jail line, sheriff records, VINE, or the court file before relying on it.
Important: a live jail roster is a current-custody snapshot. A release record, court event, or notification record is the better path after the person leaves custody.
Butler County Release Types
Release type explains where to look next. Bond and recognizance releases usually point back to the Butler County court file. Time served, dismissal, sentence completion, and probation entries are also court-driven. Transfer to ADOC, another county, federal custody, or immigration custody means the county jail release is only the handoff record, not the final custody status.
| Release type | What it means | Where to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | The person left jail while the case remains active. | Butler County Circuit Clerk and Alacourt ACCESS |
| Time served or sentence complete | The jail sentence ended or the credited time satisfied the order. | Jail record and sentencing court |
| Probation or split sentence | The person is outside jail but may report to supervision. | ABPP Greenville Field Office and court order |
| Transfer to ADOC | The county jail booking ended because state custody began. | ADOC inmate search while current, then ADOC records |
| Federal or immigration pickup | Another custodian took control after local release. | BOP, ICE ODLS, U.S. Marshals, or the court docket |
Use the release reason as a routing clue. It is not enough to know that the person left the jail roster. The record that explains why the person left often lives with the court or receiving agency.
Butler County Release Record Fields
A Butler County release record is usually tied to a booking record. The sheriff may maintain the booking date, booking number, charge information, release date, release time, release reason, bond information, court disposition notes, and booking photograph if one is publicly releasable. The research did not find a published Butler County field list, so requesters should ask for the exact fields needed and let the sheriff identify what is maintained for that booking.
| Field | What it can show |
|---|---|
| Full name and identifiers | Helps separate people with similar names. |
| Booking date or range | Connects the request to a specific jail event. |
| Release date and time | Shows when the jail booking ended, if maintained. |
| Release reason or type | May show bond, court order, transfer, time served, or other cause. |
| Charge or case reference | Points to the Butler County court file for legal context. |
| Booking photograph | May be available as a separate record, subject to law and redaction. |
Obtain Butler County Release Records
For county jail records, use a narrow written request to the Butler County Sheriff's Office unless staff provides a more specific form. Address the request to the sheriff at 801 Walnut Street, Greenville, AL 36037. For immediate custody status, the judiciary directory lists the Butler County Jail at (334) 382-3321, and the county page lists the sheriff office at (334) 382-6521.
- Identify the person by full legal name, date of birth if known, and approximate booking date.
- Ask for the booking and release record, release date and time, release reason, and booking photograph if publicly releasable.
- Include a case number or arresting agency if known, since court files often explain the release.
- Ask for the current fee, delivery method, and whether any portion must be redacted or withheld.
- If the person became an ADOC inmate, use ADOC Form 23-A for state prison records.
ADOC records have their own process. ADOC says public-records requests must be written on Form 23-A and submitted to the Public Records Coordinator. The form can be sent by mail, hand delivery, or email to public.records@doc.alabama.gov, and ADOC says telephone or fax requests are not accepted. Verify the current processing fee on the latest form before sending payment because the research found older and newer fee references in the form materials.

Butler County Release Law
Alabama Code ยง 36-12-40 states that every resident has the right to inspect and copy public records except as otherwise provided by law. That broad rule does not make every jail detail public. Juvenile records, youthful-offender records, sealed records, expunged records, active case material, private identifiers, medical information, and safety-sensitive details may be limited.
The Alabama League of Municipalities public-records reading treats jailer logbook information and mugshots as public records, subject to exceptions. Use that support with care. The sheriff still controls the local jail record, and the answer may depend on the exact file, the case status, and any court order. For expungement, ALEA's expungement page says a certified criminal history record is needed before filing and points to the court petition process.
Butler County Court Release Proof
The court record is central in Butler County because the sheriff app did not expose a reliable release archive during research. The Butler County court site lists the courthouse at 700 Court Square in Greenville, and the Circuit Clerk page identifies criminal-division routing. Alacourt ACCESS provides statewide trial-court access one case at a time.
Search for events that explain custody. Useful words include bond posted, order setting bond, release order, warrant recalled, sentence, probation order, revocation, jail credit, dismissal, nolle prosequi, acquittal, appeal, and transfer. A docket may never use the exact word released. It may still explain why a Butler County inmate left jail and what legal duty remains.
Find Released Butler County Inmates
The strongest search path starts with custody type, not with one database. A person released from the Butler County jail should be checked through the sheriff app or web app, the jail line, Alabama VINE, and the court docket. A person transferred to state prison should be checked through ADOC while still current, then ADOC records, ABPP, VINE, and the sentencing court after release. A federal or immigration case needs BOP, ICE ODLS, U.S. Marshals, or the federal court record.
- Check the Butler County Sheriff's Office OCV app for current detention or recent-arrest data.
- If the person is missing, call the jail or sheriff and ask for custody status and release confirmation.
- Search Alabama VINE for custody status and release notifications.
- Review the Butler County court docket for the legal event that caused release.
- Use ADOC, ABPP, BOP, ICE, or ALEA only when that system matches the person's custody path.
The recent-release pages explain the checked app-feed gap for 24-hour releases, while the release date lookup page covers ADOC's minimum release date fields for state inmates.
ADOC Search for Butler Releases
ADOC's inmate search is useful for a Butler County case only when the person is a current ADOC inmate. ADOC states that the public database contains currently incarcerated inmates only and that historical data is not available online. That means ADOC is not a statewide archive of released people. If a current record disappears, confirm through ADOC records, ABPP supervision, VINE, and the sentencing court.
The ADOC search uses AIS number, first name, and last name. ADOC says the AIS number is the unique six-digit number assigned to an inmate and is the quickest search method. If AIS is entered, name fields are ignored. Name searches are open-ended and capped at 50 displayed results, so common names require care.
| ADOC field | Use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| AIS number | Best identifier for a current state inmate | Takes priority over name fields |
| First name | Open-ended name search | Can return broad results |
| Last name | Open-ended name search | Displayed results capped at 50 |
| Minimum Release Date | Earliest scheduled release to probation or end of sentence | Can change after discipline or court updates |
| Parole Consideration Date | Tentative parole-board consideration date | Not the same as release |
The ADOC definitions page defines jail credit, good time, time served, total term, sentence type, parole status, and date fields. If Butler County is the commit county, compare the ADOC record with the Butler County court file because ADOC says the circuit clerk prepares jail credit.
Butler County Recent Releases
No distinct Butler County 24-hour or 72-hour public release feed was found. The county page says the sheriff office has its own app, and the OCV manifest shows features titled Inmate Search and Recent Arrests. During research, the live inmate and recent-arrest endpoints returned empty arrays. No release date field, booking photo field, archive window, update cadence, or retention period could be verified from the live public data.
This makes the app a first check, not a final answer. If it later contains data, read the record carefully and confirm release through the jail, VINE, or court. If it is empty, do not infer release or non-release from that alone.
The sheriff app channel is shown at bcso-al.com.
The app screenshot supports the local search path, but the release record still needs confirmation from the jail, court, VINE, or a written request.
Butler Release Notifications
Alabama VINE and VINELink are the notification layer for custody changes. Use the Alabama page to search for one person, choose the matching record, review the status and facility, and register for available phone, email, text, app, or account notices. VINE is not the court disposition record. It should be checked against the sheriff, court, ADOC, or ABPP record for the release reason.
Federal and immigration channels are only relevant when the case points there. BOP's inmate locator covers federal inmates from 1982 forward. BOP explains that a past release date with no facility location means the person is no longer in BOP custody. ICE ODLS covers current ICE detention or CBP custody over 48 hours. The research found no reliable official evidence that Butler County, Alabama's jail is an ICE detention facility.
Butler Released vs Custody Lookup
Different systems answer different questions. Do not use a current-custody roster as the only path for someone who has already left jail.
| Question | Best first source | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Is the person still in Butler County jail? | Sheriff app or jail phone | Jail record if the app is empty |
| Why did the person leave jail? | Release record and court docket | Bond, disposition, sentence, or transfer order |
| Did the person enter state prison? | ADOC current inmate search | ADOC records and Butler County court file |
| Is the person under supervision? | ABPP Greenville Field Office | Parole results, VINE, or court order |
| Was the person federally released? | BOP or federal court record | U.S. Marshals or receiving agency if transferred |
Butler Jail History Context
Butler County has a useful local jail-history point. WSFA reported in 2009 that the old jail, built in 1927 and once holding 52 inmates, was being torn down after a newer jail with room for 96 was in use. Treat that as historical context only. Current capacity, staffing, and release timing need current official confirmation.
That history helps explain why older news stories, old addresses, and current sheriff records should not be mixed without checking dates. The current Butler County jail and sheriff contact route in this build is the Walnut Street sheriff office and the jail phone listed by the judiciary directory.
